The Longevity Ladder

Nobody works on all six of these at once. Start with the rung that matches what is actually going on in your life right now.

Rung 3

Move & exercise

Exercise is the closest thing to a general-purpose intervention in medicine. Nothing else I can recommend touches this many systems at once.

What to build

  • Lift something heavy. Strength is what gets you off the floor, out of a low chair, and up a flight of stairs.
  • Get your heart rate up. Moderate or vigorous activity, in whatever form you will actually repeat next week.
  • Practice balance before you need it. A fall is far easier to prevent than to recover from.
Evidence foundation and scope

The Ladder is a way of organizing the conversation. It is not a clinical assessment, and it is not a promise that any one habit will add years to your life. Its emphasis on function, prevention, activity, recovery, and connection follows public guidance from the organizations below.
