Spring Cleaning for Your Health: Detox Your Habits, Not Just Your Home
I love a clean home. Specifically, I love a clean home because it helps my headspace and focus. But as we ring in spring, it’s not only the perfect time to open up our windows and tidy up our living spaces, but also the perfect time to refresh our daily habits and focus on overall wellness. Just like clutter in your home, unhealthy habits can build up and weigh you down. A health-focused “spring cleaning” can help you feel more energized, focused, and ready to embrace the season.
1. Declutter Your Eating Habits
Spring is ideal for taking a fresh look at what’s on your plate. Start by:
Reducing processed foods and added sugars
Incorporating more seasonal produce like leafy greens, radishes, and berries
Planning balanced meals that prioritize whole foods
Even small changes—like swapping soda for water or preparing meals at home—can make a big difference in energy and digestion.
2. Reset Your Sleep Routine
During winter, it’s easy to fall into irregular sleep patterns. Re-establish a consistent bedtime and aim for 7–9 hours of sleep per night. Good sleep supports immune function, mood, and memory—especially important for older adults.
3. Let Go of Sedentary Habits
Warmer weather makes it easier to get outside and move more. Whether it’s walking, gardening, or gentle stretching, aim to reduce sitting time and build activity into your daily routine. Even 10-minute bursts of movement count - aim for 150 minutes per week!
4. Simplify Your Stress
Take time this season to clear out mental clutter. Consider:
Journaling for a few minutes a day
Practicing deep breathing or short meditations
Spending time in nature or with loved ones
These habits reduce stress levels and support emotional well-being.
5. Organize Your Wellness Goals
Just like sorting your closet, it’s helpful to review your health goals:
Are they still relevant?
What’s working and what’s not?
Could you benefit from more support or a check-in with your healthcare provider?
Write down a few spring goals you can realistically achieve—like staying hydrated as the weather warms up or walking 3x a week!
