Spring into Motion: Fun Ways to Stay Active All Season Long

We are wrapping up our “Spring into Movement” series this month, and as we say goodbye to winter and welcome the energy of spring, it’s the perfect time to find joy in movement. Staying active doesn’t always mean structured workouts—there are plenty of fun, low-pressure ways to keep moving that support your health, independence, and overall well-being.

Whether you're a seasoned fitness enthusiast or just getting started, adding playful and purposeful movement to your routine can help meet the American Heart Association’s recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. This means you will notice your heart beating faster, you will breathe harder than normal, and may have some sweating. You should still be able to carry a conversation with a workout partner though! If you want to be very precise about it, moderate intensity exercise is usually 50-70% of your maximum heart rate. Maximum heart rate is calculated by subtracting your age from 220. Roughly, my maximum heart rate would be around 180, which means that 70% is around 125 beats per minute (180 x 0.7).

Everyday Ways to Move More

1. Dance Around the House 🕺💃
Turn on your favorite music and have a living room dance party. Dancing boosts cardiovascular health, coordination, and mood—all while being a fun way to stay active.

2. Try a Stretch and Stroll Combo 🌳
Head to your favorite park for a gentle walk, but start and end with some light stretching. This helps warm up your muscles and improves flexibility.

3. Join a Local Movement Class 🧘‍♀️
Spring is a popular time for outdoor classes—look for Tai Chi, yoga, or walking groups at local community centers or parks.

4. Play with Grandkids or Pets 🐕👫
Chasing a frisbee, playing tag, or walking the dog adds joyful movement to your day and builds connection with loved ones.

5. Take Advantage of Gardening Season 🌿
Bending, digging, and lifting during gardening all count as physical activity. Plus, it’s great for your mind and body!

Make Movement a Habit

  • Set reminders on your phone to stand, stretch, or take a quick walk.

  • Track your steps or activity time with a pedometer or app.

  • Celebrate progress, no matter how small. Every bit of movement counts.

Final Thoughts

Spring is a season of growth—so let it inspire you to grow your movement habits, too. Find what makes you smile, move your body in ways that feel good, and enjoy the benefits of a healthier, more vibrant you.

Let’s keep moving, all spring long!
