Covid-19 Update

This week, we’ll briefly pause the geriatric education for a quick update on the CDC’s guidance regarding fully vaccinated individuals. “Fully vaccinated” in the United States is defined by being two weeks out from the last Covid-19 shot in the series. There is only one injection in the Johnson & Johnson series, and two in both the Moderna and Pfizer.

First I’ll quickly address some common misconceptions regarding the vaccines. There are many rumors surrounding the vaccinations, most widely spread on social media sites. In fact, one research group estimates 65% of the false data on social media is due to the “Disinformation Dozen.” Unfortunately, there are physicians in this group, notably DOs such as myself, and this group of people are pushing misinformation, lies, and seeding distrust regarding valid medical research. Vaccines are safe, effective, do not mutate DNA, and do not contain a microchip. For more detailed information, visit the CDC website.

Now the exciting part! According to the CDC, fully vaccinated individuals can resume pre-pandemic activities! This includes indoor and outdoor activities - visiting friends, tailgates, worship activities, and, especially important to me, hot yoga! Many clinicians have noticed a significant decline in our patients’ (as well as our own) mental health this past year, and I am cautiously optimistic that we will see a societal improvement. For easier understanding of choosing safe activities, here’s a visual depiction from the CDC!

Although we have this exciting new guidance from the CDC, I will be slow to make personal changes in my life. Despite the safety and efficacy of the vaccines, there has been significant hesitancy and so there will be many unvaccinated adults in the community. I will continue to use a mask, especially if I will be in crowded areas, and will continue to sanitize my hands frequently. We are all in this together, and small steps taken individually are huge steps taken collectively.

Key Points:

  • Vaccines are safe and effective

  • Fully vaccinated individuals can resume activities they were doing before the pandemic
